Having a pickup truck in a big city might seem strange, but for Kelly Landin, a teacher in Detroit, it’s all but essential.
Her favorite, she says, was the Econoline, which her family used on long road trips from Detroit to Florida. The old Econoline vans had built-in tables and fold-down seats and swiveling captain’s chairs, so the vans would function almost like a mobile living room—much more fun, she remembers, than making the 20-hour-plus drive in a typical car.
Most recently, Kelly drove an F-150, which she used for decidedly noble purposes. A 17-year veteran of Detroit’s public schools, she currently teaches math to middle schoolers. (She has two children; her eldest followed in her footsteps and now teaches at the same school.) Her school district is a tough one, lacking funding and personnel, so she goes above and beyond to help out. “I run the recycling program for our school,” she says. “So at the end of every week, I get the recycling from 1,100 students and take it in the back of my truck to the recycling center.”
Kelly has her eyes on a new F-150 after seeing the features of the 2015 model. “I love the grille on the new truck,” she says. “Love it. Love the new features. Love the navigation.” And having a truck will help her out in Detroit traffic. “Driving back and forth to work, stuck in all that gridlock traffic—to be able to see over several cars gives me a better sense of safety and security,” she says.
