DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 30 U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co. said it was reaching into the clothing discard pile for sound-proofing material for the Ford Focus.

"One of our key goals is to use more recycled or renewable materials without compromising performance or durability. Recycled content is a way to divert waste from landfills and reduce the impact of mining virgin material," said Ford's product sustainability manager Carrie Majeske in a statement.

Ford has tried using recycled materials, turning to soy foam for seat cushions and recycled resin for underbody systems. The automaker has also used recycled yarn for seat covers.

For the Focus, scheduled for production in 2011 in Asia, Europe and the United States, there will be about two blue jeans worth of recycled cotton for carpet backing and sound absorption.

"The good news is these jeans didn't end up in a landfill, nor did we use the water, fertilizer and land to grow virgin cotton," Majeske said.
