A Sustainable Future for Ford

Every year, tons of biomass waste is being produced creating build up. This underutilized waste can actually be obtained at a fairly low cost and can be used to produce efficient and light weight products.

In 2000, Ford began researching sustainable materials for their vehicles, and now proudly uses eight sustainable-based materials when producing their vehicles. These include: soy foam, castor oil, wheat straw, kenaf fiber, cellulose, wood, coconut fiber, and rice hull.

Ford recently partnered with the Jose Cuervo®  Tequila Company and officially added the agave plant to the list. Side by side, they are researching the use of agave by-product from the tequila production process to develop more efficient bioplastics for future Ford vehicles.

If you are an owner of a Ford vehicle, this is great news. Effectively creating a sustainable composite from agave will decrease the weight of your vehicle, which would improve fuel efficiency for fuel efficiency and hybrid models, and the battery range of EV vehicles. This also allows Ford's efforts to decrease the use of petrochemicals and the environmental impact of vehicle production.
